All You Need To Know

  • How do I know if I have a gas leak?

Common signs of a gas leak include a strong sulphur or “rotten egg” smell, hissing sounds near gas lines or appliances, visible damage to pipes or connections and physical symptoms like dizziness or nausea. If you suspect a gas leak, turn off the gas at the meter (if safe to do so), ventilate the area and contact a licensed gas fitter immediately. Gas leaks are dangerous and should never be ignored or diagnosed without professional help.

  • Can I install a gas appliance myself?

No. In Australia, it’s illegal and extremely unsafe to install or modify gas appliances or pipework without a gas fitting licence. DIY gas work can lead to dangerous leaks, carbon monoxide exposure, fire risk or legal penalties. Even seemingly small jobs like connecting a BBQ to a gas bayonet or relocating an oven must be carried out and certified by a licensed gas fitter. After installation, the fitter will pressure-test the system and provide documentation that proves compliance with safety regulations.

  • What’s the difference between natural gas and LPG?

Natural gas is piped directly from the street into your home, while LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) comes in refillable bottles or cylinders. Both types require different regulators and pipework, and appliances must be compatible with the gas type used. Natural gas is typically more convenient if you're connected to mains supply, while LPG is ideal for rural properties or areas without access to the gas network. A licensed gas fitter can help you choose and install the right system based on availability and usage needs.
